Osage County Paper Article 1930: Hotel at Westphalia is bought by F.C. Rehagen.

Resort is purchased by Osage Countian from A.J. Kremer for the Sum of $8,000.

The new management will assume control of the hotel immediately. Rehagen is well known in Osage County where he has resided the greater part of his life. He is regarded as an enterprising business man and the hotel will doubtless flourish under his direction.
Mr. Kremer said that he was not in a position to announce at this time any business plans he may have for the future, but that he will probably leave Westphalia.

The hotel at Westphalia has long been regarded as an ideal place for entertainments by the people here. The Maries River is close by and it is well known locally as an excellent fishing resort.

Terry and Mary Neuner add their family’s list of Award-winning wines to Inn’s amenities.
For 79 years, the Westphalia Inn has been a tradition in Osage county.  Now, under new ownership, the tradition carries on – with an added touch.

Terry and Mary purchased the Westphalia Inn in August for two main reasons: The family’s love of old buildings and to use the top floor to showcase the family’s award-winning wines.

Since day one, the couple, along with the help of their family, has worked to carry on the tradition of the Westphalia Inn started by the Rehagen family in 1930. It’s been in continuous operation since 1930 and has been traditionally renowned for its food and its family style atmosphere Terry said. We are definitely going to carry that on. With that in mind, the family has worked tirelessly to build a relaxing motif through remodeling projects, including the upstairs portion of the inn.

Terry said the Westphalia Inn was originally built as a hotel and restaurant. Although it currently is not used as a hotel, because the family did not want to interrupt the long time tradition during the remodeling process, Terry said they will continue to operate the restaurant through the process.

The first night, we only had four patrons, Terry said. Now that the word has spread that we are open, we fill up pretty quickly. The people really seem to enjoy the restaurant, and we really enjoy having them here.”

Windows have been replaced and handicapped facilities have been added and ground-source heating and cooling has been installed. It’s been a fairly large remodeling project.’ Terry said. About 12,000 square feet worth. The current Westphalia Inn building was constructed in 1930 after the original building, which was next door, was destroyed by fire. This building was acclaimed, at that time, for being the first fire-proof building in the county. Terry said there was nothing wood. It was 100 percent concrete and metal, which makes our remodeling project now even more of a project.” Terry said the building was used as the Civil Defense building for the area during the Cold War.

This building could be a bomb shelter. Said Eric Neuner, Terry’s son, It’s a solid rock”.  Although the remodeling project continues, the Norton Room, on the upper level, is open for business with plans of a grand opening later in the winter.

The Norton Room, named for the family’s award winning wine, offers a relaxing atmosphere where patrons are invited to unwind, enjoy the scenery and partake in a tasting of a variety of family-produced wines.
The Westphalia Inn and the Norton Room are both open every Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon and early evening for appetizers, dinner and drinks.

“It is really amazing to look back through the old records and see the number of people who have visited here.” Eric said.

Plans for the future include a remodeling project in the lower level of the inn. The lower level will be used as a wine bottling and aging cellar.

“We are going to line the walls with wine racks to bottle and age the wines and have a barrel of all of our wines that will be aging in oak,” Eric said. We will then be able to offer barrel tasting from the barrels. They can go down, fill up a carafe and bring it back to their table.

In the meantime, Terry said the home-style tradition will continue with a menu of pan fried chicken, country ham and German pot roast. The Westphalia Inn is located at 106 E Main St. in Westphalia.

Hotel Tidbits
Celia Rehagen did most of the cooking for the guests and canned fresh vegetables and butchered the chickens on site.
